5 Tips For Keeping Your Computer Safe and Secure From Hackers & Viruses

Computer security is more important than ever. As many people are using the computers to shop online and using online banking, it’s very important to have strong systems in place to secure your data.

There are people out there called “hackers” who are looking for ways to steal your information – even your identity. These people use a variety of schemes and scams to get your money, and to leave you vulnerable for attacks. One common attack is something called “phishing”. Phishing is when someone sends an email claiming to be an established and legitimate business – but in truth they’re trying to steal your identity.

There are ways to protect yourself from scams like this and this is what this article will focus on. You will learn 10 tips for securing your computer so that schemes like this will not happen to you. Here’s tip number 1:

TIP #1: Backup, backup, backup

Always make backups of your files and important information and keep in a safe place. You may wish to store your files on a flash drive or external hard drive – or even on CD’s. No matter what you store it on, be sure to back up your files so that they don’t get lost.

TIP #2: Update your operating system

You want to keep your system up to date so that viruses can’t penetrate your system easily. You can go to the windows update website to update your computer right now to stay ahead of viruses and other online threats. Simply type in “windows update” in Google to get to this website. You will also want to find updates for all of your Microsoft Office programs by typing in “microsoft windows office updates” in Google too.

TIP #3: Have a firewall installed

When you install a firewall, you block a ton of viruses from accessing your computer. Without one, worms, trojans, malware and other viruses can get into your computer and do serious harm. There are both hardware and software firewall programs – so be sure to research which is best for you and your system.

TIP #4: Check your internet browser settings

I’m sure you heard of Active-X scripts and Javascript before. But what you don’t know is that hackers can use these two things to gain access to your computer. Cookies are harmless but you should still be sure to clear out your cookies everyday so that you don’t leave a “footprint” of your internet activity. If you’re using Internet Explorer as your browser, you should set your security settings for the internet zone at “High” and you should set the settings for your trusted sites zone to “medium low”.

TIP #5: Have a good antivirus

Having a good antivirus program will ensure that you can stop and even prevent viruses from destroying your system. You will always want to make sure that you have the latest update of your virus software so that you can be on top of any new viruses that may have recently been created. You want to run an antivirus scan everyday just to ensure that nothing new has crept onto your system while you were browsing online.

All 5 of these tips will keep you safe and secure from all of the internet threats out there. Be sure to start using them today so that your system can remain virus-free and out of the hands of hackers online.
